In Hartland, elementary school students gleefully enjoy 25 minutes a day of noontime recess, supplemented with another 30 to 40 minutes of ungraded "activity time," all aimed at giving them a much-needed break from their books. About 50 miles away, students in New Britain have less than half that amount of free time, because that is all officials feel can be spared from an increasingly demanding academic day.

The value of recess in elementary education programs is a topic often debated in an era when schools are being called upon to provide instruction on an increasing number of topics.
